Dr. Derek Mahony

image005Derek Mahony is a world renowned Specialist Orthodontist who has spoken to thousands of practitioners about the benefits of interceptive orthodontic treatment. Early in his career Dr Mahony learned from leading clinicians the dramatic effect functional appliance therapy can afford patients in orthodontic treatment. He has been combining the fixed and functional appliance approach ever since. His lectures are based on the positive impact such a combined treatment approach has had on his orthodontic results and the benefits this philosophy provides from a practice management viewpoint.

After completing his Dental Degree at the University of Sydney Dr Mahony proceeded to the United Kingdom where he completed his Masters Degree in Orthodontics at the Eastman Dental Hospital, Institute of Dental Surgery, London.

Further studies led to the successful completion of a Diploma in Orthodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Dr. Mahony has also passed the Royal College of Dentists in Canada post graduate examination in the field of orthodontics.

Dr Mahony has passed examinations leading to a postgraduate qualification in Dentofacial Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow. He has also attained his Membership in Orthodontics qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons, England. (See Education section)

Dr Mahony has been seeing an average of 250 patients per week for the last decade and has gained a vast amount of experience which he can pass on to clinicians so that they can come to appreciate the key elements of his combined treatment approach. He currently has over 3000 orthodontic patients in active treatment and has been a key note speaker at the International Orthodontic Summit meetings, the International Association of Orthodontics meetings, and the American Association of Functional Orthodontics meetings. He is considered by some to be the next leading lecturer on functional/fixed orthodontics.

Dr Mahony approaches his orthodontic diagnosis from a “facial profile” point of view. He sets his treatment goals to create not just straight teeth, but beautiful faces and healthy temporomandibular joints.

Dr Mahony is a contributing editor to the Journal of Clinical Paediatric Dentistry, International Orthodontic Journal and Spanish Journal of Dentofacial Orthopaedics. (see Professional Activity section)

Dr. Phillip Stein

phillip-steinDr Stein graduated in 1985 from Sydney University and then spent his first two years working in a nice little practice in Cabramatta. He found this a real cultural experience and even managed to learn a few words in Vietnamese during his time there.

Phil then felt he had to honour the time honoured tradition of Aussies traipsing over and doing a stint in the UK . Another cultural experience awaited him, working in Luton which had a very large Indian and Pakistani population. Working in an NHS practice taught Phil that it was difficult or impossible to do dentistry well while working on a volume basis as there was simply not enough time to pay attention to the precise detail that good dentistry demands. This experience helped shape Phil’s philosophy of trying to be a low volume quality provider.

He returned to Sydney and commenced at the Big Bear Medical Centre in Neutral Bay after being invited in by one of his patients who owned the centre and felt that Phil would represent his centre well. He spent the next 14 years there before moving to his current location in Cremorne seven years ago.

MB ChB Otago
Bachelor of Medicine (MB) and Bachelor of Surgery (ChB), University of Otago
These degrees were conducted at the University of Otago, and together constitute a formal full-time 6 year undergraduate programme conducted through the University of Otago. The university is based in Dunedin, New Zealand, and was formerly called the University of New Zealand.
The Christchurch School of Medicine, located about 400km north of Dunedin in New Zealand’s South Island, conducts the final three years of medical clinical training. Following graduation, a one-year internship is normally completed in an Australasian Hospital.
Holding the Otago MB ChB entitles registration as a medical practitioner in Australasia (e.g. NSW Medical Board), and holders can practice the full scope of general medicine, or go on to specialty training.
Equivalent Australasian degrees are the MB BS, BM BS, BM BCh, and B Med qualifications. The US degree equivalent is the MD qualification.

Dr Coceancig is a holder of the MB ChB qualification and is fully registered as a medical practitioner in NSW. These qualifications served as his basis for medical specialty recognition with the Federal Health Insurance Agency, and therefore full surgical Medicare privileges.

BDS Hon’s Sydney
Bachelor of Dental Surgery, with Honours, University of Sydney
This degree was a five year, full-time degree which has been superceded by the combined 3 year undergraduate Science degree, and post-graduate 4 year Bachelor of Dentistry degree, conducted by the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney. The US degree equivalents are the DMD or DDS qualifications.

Honours degrees (USA/Canada equivalent is “cum laude”) are awarded to the top 10-20% of the graduating class. Other Australian universities award the “with Honours” appendage when completing a further 1 year research component.
Holding the BDS degree entitles registration with the NSW Dental Board to practice as a “dentist” or “dental surgeon”. These two terms are used inter-mutually, but do not imply specialist training or formal surgical standing.
The degree entitles practice in general dentistry, or for initiation of formal specialty training through a clinical Master’s programme.

MDS OMS Otago
Master of Dental Surgery, in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Otago
The MDS degree at the University of Otago, is a three year full-time clinical degree course (in OMS this is run part-time over five years) which holders can use as basic specialty training towards becoming Orthodontists, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Periodontists, Prosthodontists and Pedodontists. The appendage “OMS” specifically refers to the clinical programme being conducted in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The degree is now effectively replaced by the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry qualification.

FDSRCS a.e. England
Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons Ad Eundem England

When “ad eundem” is added, it is meant to imply an honarary degree. It is an award based solely on ones specialist qualifications and career achievements to date, and is aimed at rewarding the practitioner by naming him a Fellow of the College. Approximately 5-7 ad eundem awards are given each year on the anniversary of the Colleges founding in July, and only to National and International dental professionals of repute and standing. Other UK based College’s also award the title “Fellow” to “Members” who have been seen to have been of higher standing than their “member” peers.

FRACDS OMS
Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the specialist field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

This is the ultimate qualification for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, and represents the pinnacle of achievement and training in the specialty. Only holders of the specific letters of “FRACDS OMS” are entitled to full Medicare specialty privileges in Australia for OMS.

Applicants for the examination leading to the FRACDS OMS must be holders of both the MB ChB and BDS degrees, and have undergone four years of formal and approved clinical training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The qualification emulates the FRACS qualification for other surgical sub-specialties within medicine and surgery (such as general surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardio-thoracic surgery etc), and closely follows European, and US/Canadian training programmes in the specialty.

Dr David McIntosh
drmcintoshDr. David McIntosh is a Queensland based ENT specialist with a subspecialty interest in airway obstruction, including sleep apnoea, and its affect on facial growth and development. David’s background is that he was trained in general ENT in Australia, before heading overseas to get more experience in specific ENT problems related to children. Whilst he is based in Queensland, he sees patients from all over Australia, and occasionally even from overseas.
Apart from his medical and advanced surgical qualifications, he also has the highest degree possible for his scientific research, a PhD in the mechanisms of wound healing after surgery.
During his high schooling, University education, and ENT training, he has received over 10 prizes and scholarships, with the most regarded being a prestigious NHMRC grant to facilitate the research he undertook into wound healing.

As part of his commitment to maintaining high standards of up to date knowledge, David has been compliant every year of his surgical career with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ Continuing Professional Development requirements. He is also a member of the Australasian Rhinological Association and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology.
David is both a National and International speaker, having presented multiple talks in all states of Australia, and also in New Zealand, Fiji, and the USA. He maintains a passion for teaching, doing over 10 talks every year for the medical community, dental specialists, and even school visits to educate teachers and parents on the damage of untreated airway obstruction. He is also often interviewed on radio and has been sourced for expert commentary for the general press and national magazines.
With respect to working with dentists and orthodontists, David has established close working relationships with the Dental community to ensure that patients are well cared for in a holistic manner. Not only does David welcome referrals from the dental community, he actively reciprocates with patients advised to seek out specialist knowledge for co-existent dental pathology. With new research showing that airway obstruction in children often requires both ENT and orthodontic intervention, David has embraced a team approach to caring for this group of patients.
